It is one of the founding members of the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ).
Founded in February 1988, the society currently has 40 group members including 16 regional societies, and thousands of individual members. CSSTJ has tremendous resources in media and journalist talents. In the past years, it has played an active role in science communication, offering important academic suggestions or references to Chinese policymakers in the fields of science and technology development.
The main activities of CSSTJ include organizing training programs and academic seminars, sponsoring national and international conference every other years for academic exchange, organizing competition of science news report, and publishing academic papers proceedings. Since its establishment, CSSTJ has done much in disclosing quasi-science to maintain the dignity of science and safeguards the legal rights of people in the field of science and technology.
As for international academic exchange, CSSTJ has successfully organized six sessions of Asia-Pacific Symposium on Press and Scientific and Social Progress (APSP). Since the first session in 1992, APSP has been bearing a sublime social responsibility. It has been closely following the development of media, science and social domains across the world, analyzing opportunities and challenges, and studying corresponding solutions. In pursuit of rapid social and economic progress, both developed countries and the rising developing world attach great importance to improving their public scientific literacy, in a bid to increase their overall national strength.
Dr. Zhou Guangzhao, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress and President of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), assumed the Chairman position of the previous six sessions of APSP. Each session received hundreds of academic papers. Hundreds of scholars and experts from China and abroad discussed the characteristics, influence and trends of the media and the development strategy of traditional media in the new century. The symposiums have promoted the exchange and cooperation among the news institutions in Asia-Pacific region and accelerated the process of “Let the world know China and Let China walk into the world”. In the first session of 1992, Mr. Li Ruihuan, member of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met with the APSP delegates at the Great Hall of the People.
Over the past years, APSP symposium has become an event of considerable impact, serving as a high-level platform for media, science communities, enterprises and governments in Asia-Pacific region to exchange ideas and enhance mutual understanding on various issues related to social developments.
The 7th Asia-Pacific Symposium on Press and Scientific and Social Progress (APSP2010), scheduled for the latter half of 2010 in China, will certainly promote such efforts, offering strong intellectual support to the endeavor towards building innovative nations in the region. We are very grateful to all friends supporting this event and sincerely welcome your participation in APSP2010. We believe the APSP2010 can further bridge the media in Asia-Pacific region, promote coordination between media, science community and other social groups, and boost the innovation capacity in the region, which will surely be conducive to the whole human society.
